Navisworks has no IFC export. Veksle fills that gap: it reads the .nwd and .nwc binary formats directly, so no Navisworks installation, COM automation or licence is involved anywhere in the process. That extends to the model's units, which are read from the file rather than guessed at or asked for.
The output is IFC4 Design Transfer. Every element arrives as an
IfcBuildingElementProxy carrying triangulated geometry and the properties
it had in Navisworks. That makes it a coordination and viewing model — geometry and
data preserved, faithfully placed — rather than a re-authored semantic model with
walls typed as walls.
Uploads and generated IFC files are deleted from the server as soon as each conversion finishes. Nothing is stored, and no account is needed. The same converter also runs as a desktop application if you would rather keep the files on your own machine.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Veksle a Navisworks plug-in?
No. It is a standalone converter that runs in the browser, with nothing added to Navisworks and nothing installed on your machine. The rival tools in this space are all plug-ins that load inside Navisworks Manage or Simulate; this one does not.
Do I need Navisworks installed to convert a file?
No. The converter parses the .nwd and .nwc formats itself, so no Autodesk software, COM automation or licence is involved at any stage. A computer that has never run Navisworks converts a file exactly the same way.
Does Navisworks export IFC on its own?
No. Navisworks imports and appends IFC, but ships no IFC export in any edition — not Manage, not Simulate, not Freedom. Closing that gap is the reason this converter exists.
How does Veksle work, and which formats does it handle?
It reads the Navisworks binary directly and writes IFC4, taking .nwd or .nwc in and giving .ifc back. Element geometry and the properties attached to it both survive the trip.
What is the difference between NWD and NWC?
An NWC is a cache file — the lightweight geometry and property export Navisworks writes when it reads a native CAD or Revit model. An NWD is a published document holding the whole federated model in one self-contained file. Either one converts here.
Which IFC version does the converter produce?
IFC4 Design Transfer. Elements arrive as IfcBuildingElementProxy with triangulated geometry and their Navisworks properties, which makes the result a coordination and viewing model rather than a re-authored one with walls typed as walls.
Which applications open the converted file?
Any openBIM tool reads it — Solibri, BIMcollab, BlenderBIM, usBIM, Navisworks itself, or Revit's IFC link. It suits clash detection, coordination and quantity review; it is not a base for re-authoring the model.
How large a model can I convert?
Up to 2 GB, one file per conversion, with a 30-minute ceiling on each run. Expect the IFC to come back several times bigger than the model you sent, since triangulated geometry in text-based IFC is far bulkier than the Navisworks binary.
Do I have to set the model units?
Rarely. Units come from the model itself, so auto-detect is right nearly every time. Where a file records no unit the converter stops instead of guessing a scale — choose the units and run it again.
Are my files kept on the server?
No. Your upload and the IFC it produced are both erased the moment a conversion ends, and no account is needed. A desktop build of the same converter is available if you would rather the model never left your machine.
